Temporary Protection For People of the Syrian Arab Republic

WASHINGTON – Due to the violence in the Republic of Syria. USCIS announced today that people, who have citizenship in Syria, or persons whose last residence was Syria, are qualified to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The exact details can be found at www.uscis.gov/tps.

On March 23, 2012, Janet Napotitano (Secretary of Homeland Security), expressed her intent to nominate Syria for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months. This means that qualified individuals of Syrian nationality may apply for employment. Can register until February 25, 2012.

In order to be qualified in the process the Syrians must meet certain requirements for TPS: Show that has lived continuously and has been present in United States.

From the March 29, 2012 all qualified for TPS, will be subject to full control. The Syrians with criminal records are not qualified, and their applications will be rejected.
The countries currently designated for TPS are:

  • Syria
  • El Salvador
  • Haiti
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua
  • Somalia
  • Sudan and Southern Sudan.
