New York Times: Russian antiwar activists subjected to harsh conditions in U.S. detention center
Afraid that they would be conscripted or imprisoned for their political activity, two anti-war Russian activists escaped to Mexico in mid-April. At the U.S. port of entry, they requested asylum. Instead of the freedom they sought, they were handcuffed, shackled and flown to remote immigrant detention centers in rural Louisiana. Like many asylum seekers, they believe that imprisonment or death awaits them if deported.
