How Do I Renew My Green Card

If you have been living in United States and need to renew your green card to prevent from any interruption in your ability to live and work in the U.S. legally, you will need to follow a few steps in order to receive a new physical card from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Generally, individuals who meet the following criteria need to apply to have their green card, also referred to as a permanent resident card, renewed:

  • You were issued a card that is valid for 10 years that has either expired or is set to expire within six months.
  • Your child was issued a green card that was valid for 10 years before they turned 14 years old, and it is not set to expire before their 16th birthday.

We strongly recommend filing for renewal of your permanent resident card SIX MONTHS prior to its expiration.  Current processing times are horrifically long.  If you or a family member’s green card is about to expire, you or they will need to either apply online or send in your application into a USCIS office so that it can be processed. If you are planning on renewing your green card via the USCIS website, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Create a UCIS account at www.uscis.gov. Once that is created, you will then have access to Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.
  2. After filling out Form I-90, you will be required to upload evidence.USCIS will determine what evidence you will need to provide based on the information you enter on the form.
  3. Then, you will need to sign the form which can be done digitally.
  4. Finally, you will be required to pay the application fee and submit your application.

If you are going to be mailing in your paper application, these are the steps USCIS requires you to follow:

  1. Fill outForm I-90Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card completely. You will need to mail in your application to the following address:

If you are mailing it via U.S. Postal Service (USPS):

If you will be mailing it via FedEx, UPS, or DHL:

Phoenix, AZ 85034

  1. You will need to include the filing fee that corresponds with this particular type of application. USCIS accepts the following payment methods: money order, personal check, cashier’s check, or credit card.
