Texas Tribune: Immigration officials often hand over migrants to local authorities to avoid processing claims
Of the thousands of migrants arrested crossing the U.S.-Mexico border under Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security operation, many have been placed in Texas’ prison system after U.S. Border Patrol agents handed them over to state police. The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas argues that federal government officials should not be assisting in the state’s controversial “arrest-and-jail” approach.
